Skimming, Brushing, and Vacuuming: What Proper Pool Cleaning Looks Like

When we show up to service a pool here in Las Vegas, we’re not just doing a quick once-over and calling it a day. Skimming, brushing, and vacuuming might sound basic, but this is where a clean, healthy pool is either made—or missed entirely.

I’m going to walk you through exactly how we handle it at Las Vegas Pool Bros. This is our process, step by step, so you know what proper pool cleaning actually looks like when it’s done right.

Step 1: First Look & Before Photos

Before we touch anything, we take a minute to assess the pool.

We’re looking at:
• Surface debris (leaves, bugs, dust)
• Algae buildup on walls or steps
• Dirt and sediment on the floor
• Water clarity and circulation

Then we take before photos.

This isn’t just for show—it’s documentation. Every job we do gets a work product report, and these photos show exactly what we walked into. It keeps everything transparent and gives you a clear picture of the condition your pool was in before service.

Step 2: Skimming the Surface

First tool out of the truck is the skimmer net on a telescopic pole.

In Vegas, you’re not just dealing with leaves. It’s dust, pollen, bugs, and debris blowing in from all directions. That stuff sits on the surface and eventually sinks—so we get it out early.

Our process:
• Start at one end and work methodically across the surface
• Pay close attention to corners and around steps where debris collects
• Hit the skimmer baskets after to make sure water flow isn’t restricted

A proper skim isn’t rushed. We’re clearing everything we can before it has a chance to drop to the bottom.

Step 3: Brushing the Entire Pool

This is where most DIY jobs fall short.

Brushing isn’t just about appearance—it prevents algae from taking hold and breaks up buildup you can’t always see.

We brush:
• Walls from top to bottom
• Tile line (where oils and calcium build up)
• Steps, benches, and tanning ledges
• Around fittings, returns, and drains

In Las Vegas, with high calcium levels and heat, scale and algae can form fast. Brushing disrupts that before it becomes a bigger problem.

We’re not lightly gliding a brush over the surface—we’re applying pressure and making sure we’re actually loosening debris and buildup.

Brushing & Vacuuming

Step 4: Vacuuming the Pool Floor

Once everything is brushed and floating or settled, we move to vacuuming.

Depending on the pool, we’ll either:
• Use a manual vacuum for precision
• Deploy a robotic cleaner for full coverage
• Or a combination of both

Our goal is simple—nothing gets left behind.

We vacuum:
• The entire floor
• Around drains and low spots where dirt settles
• Tight corners and edges

Vegas pools collect fine dust that can make water look dull even when it’s technically “clean.” Vacuuming removes that layer and brings clarity back to the water.

Step 5: Final Check & Circulation

After the cleaning is done, we:
• Empty skimmer and pump baskets
• Check filter pressure
• Make sure water is circulating properly

Everything we stirred up needs to move through the system and get filtered out.

Before & After Photos are taken whenever we skim, brush, and vacuum a pool to remove debris. It's what differentiates us from other pool service companies in Las Vegas.

Step 6: After Photos & Service Report

Once we’re done, we take after photos.

This is where you see the difference—clear water, clean surfaces, no debris. We include these in your service report along with notes on what was done.

It’s proof. Plain and simple.

You don’t have to wonder if your pool was serviced—you can see it.

And more importantly, you know your pool is in ready-to-swim condition when we leave.

DIY Pool Cleaning: What It Takes

Now, if you want to handle this yourself, you absolutely can—but you need the right tools and consistency.

Equipment You’ll Need

• Telescopic pole
• Skimmer net
• Pool brush (matched to your surface type)
• Manual vacuum head and hose or robotic cleaner
• A working filtration system

Time Commitment

In Las Vegas, you’re realistically looking at:
• 2–4 hours per week for basic maintenance
• More if your pool gets heavy debris or starts slipping out of condition

You can’t skip weeks out here. The environment doesn’t give you that luxury.

The Challenge

Here’s where most homeowners run into trouble:

• Inconsistent cleaning schedules
• Not brushing thoroughly enough
• Missing fine debris on the pool floor
• Letting small issues turn into bigger ones

It’s not that the work is impossible—it’s that it requires discipline and attention to detail.

When It Makes Sense to Call in the Pros

Not everyone has the time, energy, or confidence to stay on top of pool cleaning every week.

And that’s where we come in.

At Las Vegas Pool Bros, this is what we do all day, every day. We don’t cut corners, and we don’t guess. We follow a proven process, document our work, and leave your pool in a condition you can trust.
