Even water that looks pretty bad can often be restored with the right combination of chemistry, circulation, filtration, brushing and cleaning. However, there are situations where replacing some—or occasionally all—of the water makes more sense.

Why Does a Pool Turn Green?

Green pool water is most commonly associated with algae. When the pool doesn’t maintain an adequate sanitizer level, algae can begin multiplying quickly.

In Las Vegas, that can happen surprisingly fast during the summer.

Water temperatures climb, sunlight increases chlorine demand, and pools can lose significant amounts of water through evaporation. Add a circulation problem, clogged filter, missed service visit or a few days of inadequate chlorine and a clear pool can deteriorate quickly.

Common causes include:

  • Low or depleted chlorine
  • Poor water circulation
  • A dirty or malfunctioning filter
  • Improperly balanced water chemistry
  • Excessive cyanuric acid (CYA)
  • Heavy debris or organic contamination
  • Pump or equipment problems
  • A pool being left unattended for an extended period

Sometimes homeowners repeatedly add chlorine without seeing much improvement. That’s usually a sign that simply adding more sanitizer isn’t addressing the entire problem.

How Bad Is the Green Pool?

Not every green pool represents the same problem.

A slightly cloudy pool with a green tint may be experiencing the beginning stages of an algae bloom. These pools are generally much easier to recover.

A bright or medium-green pool typically indicates a more established algae problem and may require more aggressive treatment, brushing and filtration.

A dark green pool where the bottom is difficult or impossible to see is a more serious situation. There may be substantial algae growth, debris and organic material consuming chlorine.

Then there are pools that have essentially become swamps. They may contain leaves, dirt, insects, algae and other debris after sitting untreated for weeks or months.

Even then, appearance alone doesn’t necessarily mean the pool needs to be completely drained.

What We Check Before Deciding Whether to Drain a Green Pool

Before deciding whether a green pool needs aggressive treatment, partial water replacement, or a complete drain, a pool professional needs to understand why the water turned green in the first place. The color may be obvious, but the underlying cause isn’t always. What looks like a straightforward algae problem can actually involve several issues working together, including water chemistry, poor circulation, inadequate filtration or an equipment problem.

That’s why the first step should be a proper diagnosis rather than simply adding more chemicals. A professional evaluation looks at the factors shown below to determine what’s preventing the pool from staying clean and sanitized. Once those pieces are understood, it’s much easier to determine whether the existing water can be restored—and what it’s actually going to take to get the pool blue again.

How a Green Pool Is Turned Blue Again

Successfully treating a green pool requires more than dumping chlorine into the water.

First, as much physical debris as possible should be removed. Leaves and organic material consume sanitizer, so trying to treat a debris-filled pool can waste chemicals and slow the entire process.

Next, the water chemistry is tested and adjusted so treatment can work effectively.

The pool is then chlorinated appropriately based on the condition of the water and its CYA level. Walls, floors, steps, corners and other surfaces need to be thoroughly brushed to expose algae to the sanitizer.

Circulation and filtration then become extremely important.

As algae dies, the pool may change from green to a cloudy blue or gray color. That’s actually progress.

Killing algae and removing algae are two different things.

Chlorine can kill the algae, but the filter still needs to remove the dead algae and other suspended particles from the water. Depending on the severity of the bloom, filters may need to be cleaned or backwashed multiple times during the recovery process.

The pool may also require vacuuming before the water becomes completely clear again.

This is why a legitimate green-to-blue cleanup is a process rather than a single chemical treatment.

When Does a Green Pool Need Water Replaced?

There are situations where treating the existing water isn’t the most practical solution.

The important distinction is that green water itself isn’t necessarily the reason to drain the pool.

The underlying chemistry may be.

Extremely High Cyanuric Acid

Cyanuric acid acts as a stabilizer that helps protect chlorine from ultraviolet light. That’s valuable in sunny Las Vegas, but CYA doesn’t simply disappear from the water.

If CYA becomes excessively high, maintaining an effective chlorine level becomes increasingly difficult.

In those situations, replacing some of the water may be the most practical way to lower CYA.

Excessive Calcium Hardness

Hard water is a major consideration for Las Vegas pools.

Every time water evaporates from your pool, the water disappears but the dissolved minerals stay behind. Then you add more hard Las Vegas water to replace what evaporated.

Repeat that cycle over and over and calcium levels can gradually climb.

Eventually, excessive calcium hardness can contribute to scaling on tile, plaster and pool equipment.

A green pool with extremely high calcium isn’t just experiencing an algae problem. It may also have a long-term water-quality problem that needs to be addressed.

Excessive Dissolved Material

Pools accumulate dissolved material over time from chemicals, source water and normal use.

If the overall water chemistry has deteriorated enough, continuing to add chemicals may become less economical than replacing some of the water.

Severe Neglect or Contamination

A pool that has been sitting untreated for months can present a different situation than a pool that turned green last weekend.

Heavy organic contamination, debris and severely deteriorated water chemistry may make water replacement more practical.

That still doesn’t automatically mean a complete drain is required.

Partial Drain vs. Complete Drain

This is an important distinction homeowners sometimes overlook.

The choices aren’t simply:

Treat the water or empty the entire pool.

Sometimes the best solution is somewhere in between.

A partial drain and refill can reduce excessive CYA, calcium hardness or other accumulated dissolved material while preserving a significant amount of the existing water.

Once the problematic levels have been reduced, the remaining water can be treated and rebalanced.

This can save water while still correcting chemistry that would otherwise make recovery difficult.

Las Vegas Hard Water Changes the Equation

Las Vegas presents some unique challenges for swimming pool owners.

Our desert climate creates significant evaporation, particularly during the hottest months of the year. Pool owners continually replace that evaporated water with mineral-rich source water.

The result is a concentration effect.

Water leaves the pool. Minerals don’t.

Over time, calcium and other dissolved material can accumulate even when the pool has been routinely maintained.

That’s why an older Las Vegas pool that suddenly turns green may have more than an algae problem.

The algae might be what finally gets your attention, but water testing may reveal that calcium hardness, CYA or other chemistry has been creeping upward for years.

In that situation, we want to correct the whole problem—not just make the water look blue again.

Why You Shouldn’t Automatically Drain a Green Pool

Seeing dark green water makes draining the pool seem like the fastest solution.

It isn’t always the best one.

A typical residential swimming pool contains thousands of gallons of water, and completely draining it creates additional considerations beyond the cost of refilling it.

Pool surfaces also aren’t necessarily designed to sit empty indefinitely. In the Las Vegas summer, exposing certain interior finishes to intense sunlight and extreme temperatures can create unnecessary risk.

There can also be structural considerations associated with emptying a swimming pool depending on the pool, its construction and site conditions.

For those reasons, draining should be a deliberate decision—not a knee-jerk reaction to seeing algae.

If the water can reasonably be restored, green-to-blue treatment may be the better solution.

How Long Does It Take to Turn a Green Pool Blue?

There isn’t one answer because every green pool is different.

A mild algae problem can respond relatively quickly once the underlying chemistry and circulation issues are corrected.

A severely green pool may take several days of treatment, brushing, filtration, filter cleaning and vacuuming before the water is completely clear.

One thing that often surprises homeowners is that the pool may still look cloudy after the algae has been killed.

That’s normal.

When algae dies, microscopic particles remain suspended in the water. The filter needs time to capture those particles.

A pool changing from dark green to cloudy blue is generally moving in the right direction. The filtration system simply hasn’t finished the job yet.

Trying to rush that process by continuously adding more chemicals isn’t necessarily going to make the water clear faster.

Why Did My Pool Turn Green Again?

Getting a pool blue again doesn’t mean much if it turns green again a week later.

Recurring algae usually means the underlying cause wasn’t completely resolved.

Maybe the chlorine level dropped again. Perhaps CYA is too high. The filter could be dirty or undersized. There could be a circulation problem, a malfunctioning pump or algae remaining in areas that weren’t adequately brushed and treated.

This is one of the biggest differences between simply treating green water and diagnosing a green pool.

We want to understand what caused the problem so it stays clear.

Can You Fix a Green Pool Yourself?

A knowledgeable homeowner may be able to handle a mild algae problem, particularly if the pool equipment is working properly and the water chemistry isn’t severely out of balance.

The problem comes when homeowners begin treating based solely on appearance.

Adding gallon after gallon of chlorine without knowing the CYA level, pH or condition of the filtration system can become expensive without solving the underlying issue.

Likewise, algae isn’t always the only problem.

If the pool turned green because circulation stopped, the filter is failing or the water chemistry has reached the point where partial replacement is necessary, chemicals alone won’t solve it.

The worse the pool gets, the more valuable accurate testing and diagnosis become.
